Space Ranger - Developing the MVP
Hi all,
My name is Dima and I am a designer and front-end developer. SpaceRanger is my second solo-game project and it's made with VueJS javascript framework. Making games with Unity, Unreal Engine, Cocos and others is common practice. But I choose this way just because I use this technology in my everyday life. Please tell me what do you think about developing games with HTML5 and javascript that weren't designed to develop games?
I tried Unity once, but to make something in Unity takes a lot of time for me, and my ideas are very simple and basic, so I developed SpaceRanger in the quickest way I know. All animations, effects, and grids were made with CSS. I understand that with Unity it could be much more exciting with beautiful explosions and effects, but I prefer to focus on the gameplay. If analytic numbers will prove the concept - I will think about finding professional Unity developers and special effects experts. Meanwhile, I see that some kind of people like this game in basic design.
Now a few words about the game mechanics. The game idea is really simple, generally, it is a sea battle for a single player in space settings. The game has a story, but it's not implemented into the gameplay, I can do that later. In the current step, I need just more feedbacks. The multiplayer version could be added as well.
During the testing with people, many of them mentioned that they don't understand the game, so I added the onboarding level and made everything a little bit easier. Last time I played it with my small nephews below the age 10, they even don't know to ready and they successfully finished the game in 15 minutes. Yes, the game has just 15 levels, potentially levels can be endless and I have so many ideas for the gameplay improvements and features, but I afraid to invest in it all my free time. I have other projects as well and I want to be sure that something I make will succeed, the current version is MVP made for the test. It took around a year of slow temp development with long pauses, thinking, and analyzing periods before it got live.
The most valuable thing, for now, is your honest feedbacks, also if you liked the game and idea, and want to join feel free to contact me.
Thank you for reading :)
